When is the RSS updated and what triggers it?

History

I get a new feed when a question is added to a category but not when the question is answered or commented on. Is this correct?

Is there something I can do to make it easier to use the RSS feed for a for REAL TIME support?

Thanks in advance.

That's a great question, and I'm researching an exact answer on the timing. In my experience, the RSS updates pretty quickly. But it's heavily dependent on what RSS reader you use and how aggressive it caches. Google Reader, for example, is notorious for delaying updates of RSS feeds. There are some things that we can do to notify them and improve performance. What reader are you using? What other methods would be useful for real-time notifications? Options I can think of: IRC, AIM/Jabber, email, SMS. What would be most useful?

Kyle Wiens,

I worded things wrong. I don't mind the delay on the feed. It was more of the trigger issue. Thanks again for the fixes.

Hi Aaron. Turns out, this is a bug. Good catch! We should have a fix out later today.

Alright, answers and comments should update the RSS feed now. There may be up to a 5 minute delay between when a question changes and when the RSS feed actually updates. Let me know if you're still seeing problems. Thanks again for letting us know!

Sterling Hirsh,

You guys ROCK. Thanks for such a quick fix. Wasn't expecting it at all. It's appreciated.
