How can you see data fields during approval process?

During the approval process it is critical to verify what data is being collected on each step. Yet I don’t see a way to view the data fields in the approval screen. The work around is to go into ‘edit mode’ of the work instruction, which is a big timewaster and could lead to accidental modifications. Am I missing something in the approval process where I can see the data fields?
